Study Shows Benefits of GERD Surgery

For individuals who have been suffering from GERD and have had to depend on medications to relieve symptoms like acid reflux, a new incisionless procedure is now available that is proving to be effective at eliminating symptoms as well as the use of heartburn medications.

Doctors have been concerned about patients having to take GERD medications, as many of these drugs cause serious side effects such as an increase in the risk of osteoporosis. Many patients who suffer from GERD are not willing to have surgery due to long downtimes, surgical risks and pain associated with post-surgery. This leaves them relying on daily medicines to prevent heartburn and other symptoms. With the new procedure of TIF EsophyX fundoplication, surgeons can repair the esophageal sphincter without making any incisions.

This exciting new treatment is making headlines following an announcement made by EndoGastric Solutions, the leading manufacturer in surgical products used for natural orifice surgery. According to a 1-year study of GERD patients who received incisionless fundoplication using the EsophyX device, results were outstanding. Patients are now able to enjoy all the foods they previously had to avoid and most no longer require medications.

This new surgical procedure also allows surgeons to repair hiatal hernias, a major risk factor for GERD and reduce or eliminate esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus.

EsophyX fundoplication is performed using an endoscope for visualization while the surgeon gently lowers the EsophyX device into the stomach through the mouth. The device is then used to reconstruct the esophageal splinter to prevent stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus. The procedure is done safely and comfortably while under anesthesia. Most patients in Davie can return to their job the following day although physical activity must be restricted for the first few days. Dietary guidelines are also given to help maximize healing of the sphincter.
