Gastric Surgery

What is gastric surgery?

Location of the stomachGastric is a term used when referring to anything related to the stomach. Gastric or stomach surgery is usually performed to remove tumors or in some cases to treat severe ulcers that have not responded to medical treatment or are bleeding or perforated and require repair.

Another form of gastric surgery is often performed electively for severely obese people to help with weight loss.  Surgery for weight loss is called bariatric surgery.

What is a laparoscopic gastrectomy?

A gastrectomy is the surgical removal of the stomach.  It may be a total gastrectomy or a subtotal (partial) gastrectomy where only the affected part of the stomach is removed.

A gastrectomy is the treatment of choice for several types of stomach cancer including gastric adenocarcinomas, primary gastric lymphomas, and the relatively rare leiomyosarcoma or gastric sarcoma.

When treating stomach cancer, the tumor and surrounding area of stomach are removed.  This surgery may also require removal of lymph nodes.

As experts in advanced laparoscopic surgery, Surgical Consultants of Hollywood perform gastric surgery using 4 or 5 tiny incisions in the abdomen instead of the traditional single large incision required for an open procedure whenever possible.  This minimally invasive surgery allows our surgeons to remove the affected area of stomach and reconstruct the stomach so that it can continue to function as normally as possible.

Laparoscopic gastric surgery results in less postoperative pain and requires a shorter hospital stay than traditional open approaches.
