Gallstones

What are gallstones

When oysters have a bit of sand stuck in them, they cover it with a substance that helps protect the oyster from the possible threat posed by the sand. In the end, the oyster creates a pearl that women covet and long to wear around their necks. When your gallbladder is unable to empty as it should, contains too much cholesterol or not enough bile salt to break down the cholesterol, you form gallstones, not unlike the sand in the oyster. However, gallstones are painful and are not coveted or worn by anyone.

Your gallbladder is useful in digesting fats like cholesterol. In order to do this, it has a special bile, which is an acid that has salts and other acidic ingredients. If you have too much cholesterol, if your gallbladder doesn’t empty properly, or if your bile is off kilter and is unable to digest all the cholesterol, then you will be left with deposits of cholesterol in your gallbladder. The cholesterol sitting in your gallbladder will crystallize and form a gallstone. If this gallstone blocks any of your bile ducts, it can cause pain, fever and chills.

Many people have gallstones and exhibit no symptoms. As long as the stones do not block a bile duct, you are not likely to know they are there.
